He was educated at Leeds High School and during the evenings studied at Leeds School Of Art under Gilbert Foster who was a pioneer of the art colony at Staithes.
Owen Bowen received his first paint box as a christmas present when he was four. His brother, Miles, provided his initial art training but he soon came under the influence of Gilbert Foster at evening classes in the Leeds School of Art and privately at his studio.
He first exhibited in 1888 at the age of fifteen. The Yorkshire Union of Artists was formed in that year and he was involved at the very outset, winning two medals in the amateur section. At the second annual exhibition, four of his landscapes were hung in prominent positions. A fracas with the secretary during the third annual exhibition resulted in his expulsion at the age of only seventeen.
He had his own studio at eighteen and started exhibiting at the Royal Academy the following year. During the subsequent years, he regularly visited Staithes. To assist these summer activities, he rented a cottage for over ten years at Robin Hood''s Bay. He exhibited extensively and mounted two major exhibitions of his own work.
