He was educated at Leeds High School and during the evenings studied at Leeds School Of Art under Gilbert Foster who was a pioneer of the art colony at Staithes.

Owen Bowen received his first paint box as a christmas present when he was four. His brother, Miles, provided his initial art training but he soon came under the influence of Gilbert Foster at evening classes in the Leeds School of Art and privately at his studio.

He first exhibited in 1888 at the age of fifteen. The Yorkshire Union of Artists was formed in that year and he was involved at the very outset, winning two medals in the amateur section. At the second annual exhibition, four of his landscapes were hung in prominent positions. A fracas with the secretary during the third annual exhibition resulted in his expulsion at the age of only seventeen.

He had his own studio at eighteen and started exhibiting at the Royal Academy the following year. During the subsequent years, he regularly visited Staithes. To assist these summer activities, he rented a cottage for over ten years at Robin Hood's Bay. He exhibited extensively and mounted two major exhibitions of his own work.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Landscapes from this period feature visible brushwork, emphasis on atmospheric lighting, open-air techniques, and a focus on capturing fleeting conditions such as nocturnal moonlight and water reflections.

These works typically consist of oil pigments bound on canvas or wood panel, framed in timber embellished with carved or moulded plaster and gold leaf gilding.

Authenticity is verified through artist signatures, consistent craquelure pattern, age-appropriate stretcher bars, canvas weave characteristics, and historical gallery labels on the back.

Position the piece above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or incorporate it into a gallery wall to contrast classical gilded detailing against modern decorative elements.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and heat sources. Dust the frame and surface gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush without water or chemical cleaners.
