He was educated at Leeds High School and during the evenings studied at Leeds School Of Art under Gilbert Foster who was a pioneer of the art colony at Staithes.

Owen Bowen received his first paint box as a christmas present when he was four. His brother, Miles, provided his initial art training but he soon came under the influence of Gilbert Foster at evening classes in the Leeds School of Art and privately at his studio.

He first exhibited in 1888 at the age of fifteen. The Yorkshire Union of Artists was formed in that year and he was involved at the very outset, winning two medals in the amateur section. At the second annual exhibition, four of his landscapes were hung in prominent positions. A fracas with the secretary during the third annual exhibition resulted in his expulsion at the age of only seventeen.

He had his own studio at eighteen and started exhibiting at the Royal Academy the following year. During the subsequent years, he regularly visited Staithes. To assist these summer activities, he rented a cottage for over ten years at Robin Hood's Bay. He exhibited extensively and mounted two major exhibitions of his own work.

This oil painting by Owen Bowen dates to 1930 and belongs to the British Impressionism style. Executed in oil paint on canvas, the composition depicts a bunch of cream, yellow, and pink rose blooms arranged in a ribbed glass vase with thick impasto brushwork, set upon a wooden tabletop decorated with small carved studs along the edge against a dark brown background. The signed work measures 75 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. Positioned above a sideboard, the artwork suits an English Country House interior as a focal point in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The cleaned piece arrives in very good condition, ready to hang in domestic spaces.

British Impressionist floral still life paintings feature loose brushwork, emphasis on natural light, and spontaneous compositions inspired by nature. Artists from this movement often worked in coastal or rural colonies, capturing everyday domestic subjects such as fresh flower arrangements with rich colour tonal variations.

Artistry from this period primarily utilised oil paints composed of pigment bound with linseed oil applied onto woven cotton or linen canvas stretched over wooden frames. Panel support surfaces made of solid timber or board were also common alternatives.

Authentic oil paintings typically show genuine craquelure patterns, natural canvas aging or darkening on the reverse, artist signatures, and visible, layered brushwork. Professional appraisal, provenance documentation, and inspection under ultraviolet light also assist in verification.

A floral still life painting can be mounted above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or desk to create a central focal point. Pair the painting with traditional timber furniture, neutral walls, or period accent lighting to balance historical character with modern decor schemes.

Preserve oil paintings by hanging them away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources. Surface dust should be removed gently using a clean, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or household cleaners.
