This large Georgian reverse print on glass, titled La Bonne Mere, dates from the eighteenth century. The piece measures 70 cm high and 55 cm wide, and comes set within a moulded wooden frame finished in a weathered, pale grey wash. The artwork depicts classical maternal figures within a dark green oval vignette, accompanied by an inscribed cartouche and heraldic motifs at the base rendered in dark ink and paper. The surface of the glass shows signs of age with overpainting visible across the composition, presenting an authentic distressed texture. It makes an ideal decorative statement piece for display above a sideboard in a dining room or living space today.

A reverse print on glass, often called a glass picture, is created by adhering a paper print face down onto glass, removing the backing paper until only the thin ink impression remains, and then hand-colouring the reverse side.

These works typically utilise paper mezzotints or engravings, varnish, oil paints or watercolour pigments, flat float glass, and solid wood frames.

Authentic period pieces feature natural age-related oxidisation, micro-crackle in the paint layer behind the glass, original wooden backing boards, and slight irregularities in the hand-blown glass.

An antique glass picture works as a focal point when hung above a console table or sideboard, mixed into a gallery wall with contemporary line drawings, or paired with minimalist lighting to highlight its reflective surface.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and areas of high humidity to prevent moisture from trapping behind the glass, and clean the outer glass gently with a dry microfibre cloth without liquid cleaner.
