Silhouette of Child with Horse - Attributed to Augustin Edouart (1789-1861)

19th century
Description

A delightful early 19th century paper-cut silhouette of a child pulling a toy horse with a whip in hand.

The silhouette is well executed with delicate outline sketching of a room with a window and balcony beyond. Probably by Augustin Edouart (1789-1861) signature to the lower left rubbed with only an 'au' remaining visible at the beginning and a circle of the top if an 'i'. The work is very much in his manner.

The work is housed in an attractive rosewood frame with gilt slip.

This Regency framed artwork is an early nineteenth-century paper-cut silhouette depicting a child holding a whip and pulling a toy horse on wheels against an ink wash interior background. The piece uses paper, ink, wood, glass, and gold leaf, rendered in a warm brown colour palette. The artwork includes a mitred timber frame, a gilt sight edge, and delicate outline sketching showing a room with a window and a rubbed signature in the lower left corner. The work measures 30.5 cm high, 22.75 cm wide, and 3.5 cm deep. Displayed in a home today, this piece suits a narrow wall space in a living room, hallway, or study. It brings traditional Regency style and narrative charm to an interior setting, pairing well with period furnishings and classic decor schemes.

Popularised in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as an accessible alternative to painted miniatures, silhouettes were created by cutting dark paper profiles or painting solid black shapes onto card or paper, frequently capturing intricate personal and domestic details.

Silhouette artists typically used black paper cut-outs, India ink, or watercolour mounted onto card or paper, often set against lithographed or ink-wash backgrounds and finished with gilded slip wooden frames.

Authentic pieces often display natural paper age marks such as foxing, hand-drawn or wash background accents, precise hand-cut edges under magnification, and period-correct backing materials or framer labels.

These small-scale works are effectively displayed as part of a curated gallery wall, placed within a library setting, or hung on a narrow wall space to highlight their detailed graphic quality.

Protect paper artwork by framing with UV-filtering glass, using acid-free mounting materials, and displaying away from direct sunlight, high humidity, or extreme temperature fluctuations.
