19th century
Description

Delightful Large 19th-century Silhouette of a Girl Playing with Her Dog, a truly delightful example depicting the joy of a child playing with her dog. Inscription on the reverse, 'Aunt Lydia Born 1840', so this would have been commissioned around the middle of the 19th century. Framed and in good condition, this decorative example is one from a large group I recently acquired. Look out for the other listings. 'Take at the Hubbard Gallery' Embossed oval makers mark to the left-hand bottom corner.

A silhouette portrait is a profile image created by cutting dark paper or painting in monochrome to capture the outline of a subject. Popular during the 18th and 19th centuries before photography became widespread, these portraits often included delicate brushwork details in gold leaf or watercolour.

19th-century silhouettes were typically created by freehand cutting dark paper using scissors, or by painting directly onto paper, card, plaster, or glass using black ink or watercolour. Fine gilded detailing or light watercolour wash was frequently added to highlight clothing textures, hair, and accessories.

Authentic antique silhouettes usually display age-appropriate paper foxing, period-correct framing, and subtle hand-crafted variations such as scissor marks or fine brushwork. Backing trade labels or studio stamps from prominent 19th-century practitioners also provide strong provenance indicators.

Antique silhouettes display effectively when grouped in a gallery wall arrangement with varied frame designs, or hung individually in narrow spaces such as hallway alcoves and reading nooks. Displaying dark frames against neutral or rich jewel-toned walls creates a striking visual contrast.

To preserve an antique paper silhouette, hang the item away from direct sunlight, UV light sources, and areas of high humidity to avoid fading and paper deterioration. Always house paper artworks in conservation-grade mounts behind UV-protective glass.
