A View of Christchurch by Stanley Leader. Oil Painting on Canvas Circa 1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A large, impressive oil on canvas showing a view of Christchurch from the harbour quay with an interesting mix of buildings, cottages, boats and people.

The picturesque scene has been well captured with lovely light across the watery bay, with a view of the church in the distance.

The painting is in excellent original condition, and it displays well with its original bevelled mount with a finely written pen and ink title and artist's name.

The painting is completed with its original Art Nouveau foliate gesso frame.

The painting is fully signed, Stanley Leader, in the bottom left corner.

Stanley Leader was a British artist, well accomplished and quite prolific.

He mainly painted landscapes and pastoral scenes, working between 1880 and 1920.

He has two prominent works in oil on display at the museum gallery, Oldham. One is entitled “On the Llede” and the other “The Falls at Turnbill”

Seascapes are rare by this artist. This one is a lovely, well detailed bright painting in very good original condition.

The painting has been painted on a stretched canvas, signed Reeves of London.

This Edwardian oil painting on canvas depicts a coastal harbour scene of Christchurch by the British artist Stanley Leader, working around 1900. The composition shows buildings, cottages, sailing boats on the water, and figures on the shore beneath a blue sky. The canvas is housed in its original Art Nouveau foliate gesso frame with leaf-carved gold mouldings and a bevelled mount displaying a pen and ink title and artist signature. The bottom left corner shows the full signature of the artist, while the reverse features a stretched canvas signed Reeves of London. Measuring 65 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 5 cm deep including the frame, the piece is suited for display above a mantel in an English country house interior. The artwork provides a detailed pastoral landscape suitable for hanging in a living room, study, or hallway as a focal point.

Marine paintings from the turn of the twentieth century typically feature realistic yet atmospheric depictions of coastal activity, working harbours, and traditional sailing vessels, capturing changing light and regional maritime heritage.

These artworks were painted using oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, often housed within moulded wooden frames finished with gold leaf or metallic gilding.

Authentication involves examining natural craquelure across the paint surface, age-appropriate discolouration or canvas darkening on the reverse, artist signatures, and period-correct gilding techniques on the frame.

Position the artwork as a focal point above a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard, allowing the warm gilt tones to contrast against contemporary painted walls or dark wood panelling.

Dust gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoid placing the painting in direct sunlight or high-humidity areas, and consult a professional conservator for surface cleaning or frame restoration.
