1940 - 1960
For Sale by Sale Antiques
Description

We are pleased to offer for sale an amazing panoramic view across the Thames towards Waterloo Bridge London.

This fine example captures the late evening sunset in beautifully painted oils on canvas, capturing a distant view of Waterloo Bridge with the landscaped shorline silhouetted on the distant horizon.

The artist has painted a large three masted vessel which is moored in the foreground with a small tug boat sitting tethered alongside in its shadow.

The quality is clearly seen in the way the skilled artist has depicted the gently rippling still waters and the reflection and glow of the setting sun bouncing off of the river.

This oil painting on canvas depicts a panoramic British maritime scene showing Waterloo Bridge and a skyline silhouette along the River Thames at sunset. The composition includes a large three-masted ship moored in the foreground, a small tugboat, gently rippling water reflecting the sun, and an overcast sky with clouds in warm orange tones. The canvas sits inside a solid original wooden frame painted in cream with a light gold bevel edge. Measuring 58.5 cm high, 109 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, this large horizontal artwork works well positioned in a gentleman's library or above a mantel in a living room.

FAQs

British marine art focuses on shipping vessels, coastal waters, and navigable urban rivers such as the Thames. These paintings frequently highlight dramatic atmospheric lighting, industrial horizons, and historic vessel designs.

Oil paintings from this era were typically executed using oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen canvas or rigid wood panel. They were generally housed in carved or moulded timber frames finished with gilding, paint, or linen slip inserts.

Authentic oil paintings exhibit raised brushwork texture, natural paint layer ageing such as fine craquelure, and artist signatures on the canvas face or reverse. The back of the frame or panel often displays historical framing labels and mounting hardware.

A wide-format landscape artwork creates visual balance when hung above low furniture, such as a sideboard or fireplace mantel piece. The warm tones in sunset compositions complement neutral wall palettes and traditional timber furnishings.

Oil paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent fading and canvas warping. Dust the surface lightly with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water.
