Robert Belcher Antiques has dated this Victorian Brass Coal Scuttle to the 1880s.

The serpentine top is surmounted by an ornate raised handle with decorative copper collars for lifting.
The exterior is extensively decorated with finely executed floral repoussé work. The decoration is particularly accomplished, displaying considerable depth, crisp definition and intricate detailing throughout, demonstrating the quality of the workmanship and the decorative sophistication of the piece.

The coal box retains its original removable steel liner, together with its original fitted brass coal shovel, the latter featuring an elaborate hand turned ebony handle.
The box is raised on four shaped circular brass feet, completing its well-proportioned and distinctive design.

The combination of substantial brass construction, finely detailed hand-worked decoration and the survival of its original accessories makes this a particularly desirable example of Victorian domestic metalwork. Its completeness and attractive original condition are noteworthy, with the original liner and matching shovel adding considerably to its interest and collectability.

The piece is most likely attributable to Benham & Froud, the prominent London-based metalware manufacturers.
