This Georgian mahogany stick barometer combines architectural styling with scientific utility. The warm brown timber displays figured veneers, shaped mouldings, and a broken-arch pediment at the top, housing a glazed hinged door over an engraved silvered register plate and an alcohol action tube thermometer. Below the rectangular scale, a vertical capillary tube runs down the slim shaft to a rounded, turned wooden cistern cover at the base. The piece measures 96.5 cm high, 12.5 cm wide, and 6.5 cm deep overall. Suitable for hanging in a hallway, study, or traditional living area, this wall-mounted instrument provides functional weather tracking alongside classic period decoration. The compact proportions allow it to fit onto narrow wall spaces where floor standing furniture is impractical. The timber casework retains its original mellow colour and deep polished finish.

A Georgian stick barometer is an eighteenth or early nineteenth-century wall-mounted instrument that uses a vertical glass tube filled with mercury to measure atmospheric pressure. Housed in a slender timber casing, these instruments typically feature engraved brass or silvered register plates to display weather readings.

These instruments were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, complemented by hand-blown glass mercury tubes. The register plates and verniers were crafted from silvered brass or ivory, often housed beneath a clear glass protective screen.

Authentic period stick barometers feature hand-engraved lettering on the register plates, often including maker signatures and regional towns. Additional signs of period construction include hand-cut joinery, correct age-related oxidisation on metal components, and original glass mercury tubes held by brass fixing bands.

Due to their slender, vertical proportions, stick barometers are frequently placed in narrow architectural spaces such as hallway piers, between windows, or alongside bookshelves. They serve as historical focal points when integrated into contemporary wall galleries or traditional study interiors.

To preserve a stick barometer, it must remain securely mounted vertically to prevent mercury leakage or air ingress into the glass tube. The timber case should be kept away from direct sunlight, radiators, or damp environments, and dusted gently with a soft microfibre cloth.
