A quality Victorian marine stick barometer by Bate of London. A slim mahogany case with a brass cistern cover to the base. A well engraved dial with scale from 27 to 31 inches with a slide adjuster and a mercury bulb thermometer. An arched brass surround to the dial. A brass and mahogany gimbal mount. The top of the dial is engraved ''BATE LONDON''. A near identical one is in the Science Museum in London. Circa 1840.The Bate firm was a family instrument-making firm primarily associated with Robert B Bate (1782-1847). They were based at 20-21 Poultry in the City of London. Amongst their various clients was the Admiralty, to whom they supplied instruments and charts. After the death of R. B.
