This pair of eighteenth-century Italian Neoclassical commodes employs walnut, rosewood, and kingwood timbers with a warm brown palette, complemented by white marble tops. Each chest incorporates two long drawers detailed with geometric stringing and contrasting wood inlays, alongside rectangular framed panels, decorative central lock panels, and circular brass ring handles. The decoration extends around the sides and down the tapered square legs. Measuring 96 cm high, 126 cm wide, and 59 cm deep, these chests function practically as bedroom or hallway storage surfaces. The compact proportions suit positioning in a traditional drawing room, study, or master suite as sideboards or storage units.

Italian Neoclassical furniture emerged in the late 18th century, inspired by classical Greco-Roman archaeology. It features straight lines, geometric marquetry, refined symmetry, and balanced proportions, departing from the dramatic curves of the preceding Rococo style.

Craftsmen typically utilised native hardwoods such as walnut, fruitwoods, and olive wood for veneering and intricate marquetry inlays. Surfaces were frequently fitted with polished white marble tops, finished with hand-cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, uneven drawer linings displaying hand-saw marks, natural shrinkage lines along timber veneers, and hand-cast brass handles. Original marble tops often show age-appropriate wear and tool marks on the underside.

A pair of Neoclassical commodes can be positioned symmetrically on either side of a fireplace, placed as large bedside tables in a master suite, or arranged along a long hallway framed by modern artwork or mirrors mounted above.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax paste annually to preserve the marquetry. Protect the marble top by wiping spills immediately with a damp cloth, avoiding acidic cleansers that etch natural stone.
