Brass and Steel Mesh Fireplace Fender

19th century
Description

A decorative Edwardian fireplace fender, combining a polished brass base and top rail with finely woven blackened steel mesh.

The long, gently bowed front is flanked by rounded projecting ends, creating an elegant shape designed to sit neatly around the hearth. The steel mesh provides a practical protective barrier while retaining a light and refined appearance.

The moulded brass plinth is raised on a series of decorative ball feet, giving the fender a balanced and well-proportioned stance. The contrast between the warm brass and dark mesh makes it particularly effective as a fireside feature.

This Victorian fireplace fender is formed from brass and blackened steel, combining a polished gold-coloured top rim and base moulding with a fine dark mesh body. The low rectangular structure features curved corners and stands upon small round ball feet along the base. The front panel incorporates a diamond mesh pattern within the protective metal barrier. Measuring 25 cm high, 109 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, the fender positions directly onto a hearth in front of an open fireplace to contain embers and sparks. Placed in a living room, study, or sitting area, the piece frames a fireplace hearth while providing both a physical boundary and a decorative focal point. The metal construction suits traditional interiors, country house schemes, and period properties, coordinating easily with brass companion sets, coal buckets, and grate surrounds. The compact depth allows it to sit flush against the chimney breast without intruding far into the room space.

A fireplace fender is a low metal guard placed around the perimeter of a hearth to contain stray embers, prevent soot from spreading onto floorboards, and provide a defined decorative border around the fire opening.

Period fenders were constructed using durable metals including brass, cast iron, steel mesh, and copper. Decorative examples frequently combined polished brass upper rims with woven steel mesh panels for both heat resistance and visual contrast.

Authentic 19th and early 20th-century fenders feature heavy-gauge metal construction, hand-riveted mesh or joins, cast brass footings, and subtle unevenness or natural oxidisation on interior and underside surfaces.

A metal fender can be placed on a tiled or stone hearth to frame an active log burner, or positioned in front of a decommissioned fireplace filled with stacked birch logs or pillar candles to create a focal point.

Brass sections should be polished periodically with a soft cloth and metal cleaner to retain lustre, while the steel mesh should be kept free of moisture and dusted gently with a soft bristle brush to prevent corrosion.
