Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This nineteenth-century Gustavian style sideboard originates from Sweden and takes the form of a pale grey painted pine buffet with carved wood decoration to all sides. The design incorporates four cupboard doors, curved side panels, fluted legs, carved rosettes, diamond panels, and small round brass handles. Inside lie three unusual pull-out drawers in the centre alongside shelves at both ends, accompanied by two keys and an original pull-out shelf bearing a maker stamp. Visible signs of age include worn, weathered paintwork revealing the natural timber underneath. The piece measures 109 cm high, 170 cm wide, and 65 cm deep overall, with an up-stand reaching 119 cm at the back. Suitable for placement in a dining room or hallway, this buffet provides substantial surface space on top for displaying items such as a large glass vase filled with flowers, while the interior cupboards and drawers offer practical storage for tableware, linens, or household items.

FAQs

Originating in late eighteenth-century Sweden during the reign of King Gustav III, Gustavian furniture is a Scandinavian interpretation of French Neoclassicism, characterised by pale painted finishes, carved geometric detailing, and symmetrical proportions.

Traditional Swedish buffets are predominantly constructed from native softwoods such as pine or fir, finished with layered pale paint or whitewash, and fitted with brass or iron hardware.

Authentic pieces feature pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative motifs such as fluting or diamond panels, and original layered paint showing natural wear and oxidisation on contact areas.

A Swedish buffet functions as a focal storage piece in a dining room, hallway, or living space, pairing light painted tones against neutral walls alongside contemporary ceramics or botanical arrangements.

Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth without liquid detergents or abrasive chemical cleaners, and apply a thin layer of clear beeswax occasionally to protect exposed timber and stabilise flaking paint.
