Ormolu refers to the 18th and 19th-century technique of applying finely ground gold amalgam to a bronze object, creating gilt bronze. Highly popular in French and English Empire and Regency decorative arts, it provided a lavish gold finish for urns, clocks, and candelabra.

Craftsmen cast individual components in bronze or brass using the lost-wax technique, refined the surfaces through hand-chasing, and applied a mercury-gold gilding process. Pieces were typically assembled in sections using threaded internal iron rods and secured to a heavy square base.

Authentic early 19th-century ormolu displays fine hand-chased detailing, hand-cut screw threads, and a rich gilding tone that shows natural oxidisation rather than bright modern paint. The weight is substantial due to solid cast metal construction.

Place the piece on a polished mahogany sideboard, a marble mantelpiece, or as a focal point on an entry console table. Pair it with understated contemporary artwork or minimalist ceramics to allow the intricate metalwork to stand out.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush. Avoid abrasive metal polishes, chemical cleaners, or water, as these can strip original mercury gilding and damage the delicate surface finish.
