An eighteenth-century Georgian chest of drawers in mahogany, styled in the English Country House tradition, exhibits a rich brown colour with a figured grain and a deep patina. The piece is fitted with two short drawers over three long graduated drawers, bordered by cockbeaded edges, keyholes with brass escutcheons, and paired brass swan-neck handles on circular backplates. The top features a crossbanded design, fine stringing inlay, and a moulded edge, while the structure stands on a moulded base supported by shaped bracket feet. Measuring 90.5 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, this practical storage item sits comfortably in a bedroom, hallway, or period interior today. It provides generous storage capacity through its graduated tiers while maintaining a substantial yet balanced footprint for placement against living space walls.

Georgian chest of drawers produced between 1714 and 1830 are known for balanced proportions, straight or bow fronts, and high-quality timber such as Cuban mahogany. Design elements often include graduated drawer layouts, brass swan-neck handles, and bracket feet.

Primary woods were predominantly mahogany, walnut, or oak, while secondary woods used for drawer linings and back panels included pine and oak. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces show hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn timber marks on backboards, and uneven wear consistent with age. Secondary timbers will display natural oxidation, and original brass fittings often leave distinct shadowing on the wood.

A Georgian chest works as a anchor piece in contemporary settings when contrasted against modern artwork or neutral walls. Styling the top surface with minimalist ceramics or a sculptural table lamp balances the dark wood tone.

Regular dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and an annual application of beeswax polish will protect the timber finish. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading.
