This early Victorian credenza from around 1850 is made from warmly coloured figured amboyna and contrasting black ebony, enhanced by glazed side sections and metal column accents. The broad rectangular top sits above a symmetrical façade featuring two central doors with oval ebony panels, which show inlaid scrolling foliage and fine beading. Dark turned columns, gilded mounts, circular rosettes and geometric inlay decorate the frieze and plinth, all supported by small turned bun feet. Measuring 108.5 cm high, 161.5 cm wide and 42 cm deep, the cabinet provides substantial display and storage space. In a contemporary home, this piece works well in a formal dining room, hallway or living room to store tableware or display decorative items. The curved glass side sections hold glassware, while the enclosed central cupboards keep items hidden from view.

Early Victorian credenzas typically feature patterned wood veneers, such as amboyna or walnut, combined with ebony inlays, gilt-bronze mounts, and glazed side compartments designed for dining room storage and display.

High-quality 19th-century credenzas utilised exotic wood veneers like amboyna and ebony over solid hardwood frames, accented with cast bronze or brass mounts and curved glass panels.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature hand-cut joinery, genuine ormolu or cast brass fittings showing natural patination, thick timber veneers, and period-correct glass construction.

Position a Victorian credenza as a focal piece in a dining space or entrance hall, balancing the dark timber tones with contemporary artwork and understated lighting placed above.

Maintain antique veneers by keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources and moisture, dusting with a soft microfibre cloth, and applying beeswax polish sparingly.
