This late Victorian one-arm drop-end sofa dates to the period circa 1890–1910. The design incorporates an asymmetric profile with a raised, rounded upholstered scroll arm on one side and a drop end to the opposite side, along with a substantial upholstered back, seat and arms. The frame is traditionally upholstered in a rust-red and cream striped woven fabric and is raised on turned walnut-coloured wooden legs fitted with brass and porcelain castors. The sofa measures 78 cm high, 164 cm wide and 78 cm deep, providing a comfortable two-seater capacity. The versatile configuration allows the piece to be positioned against a wall or used more freely within a reception room, sitting room or study in an English Country House interior.

Originating in the late 19th century, a drop-end sofa features an integrated ratchet mechanism that allows one or both armrests to lower, converting the seat into a daybed or reclining lounger.

Victorian sofas were constructed using solid hardwood frames such as beech or mahogany, hand-tied steel coil springs, natural fillings like horsehair, and turned wooden legs finished with brass castors.

Authentic period examples feature heavy timber frameworks, hand-stitched upholstery edge-rolls, original brass drop-arm ratchets or hinges, and hand-turned timber legs with stamped metal castors.

Position the sofa as a focal point in a sitting room or reading nook, pairing the structured silhouette with muted neutral walls, contemporary accent lighting, or natural fibre rugs.

Vacuum fabric regularly using a soft brush attachment, nourish exposed timber legs with natural beeswax, and keep the piece away from direct heat and sunlight to prevent fabric fading and frame warping.
