Rare Mid 19th Century Satin Birch Military Campaign Chest

19th century
Description

Rare Mid 19th Century Satin Birch Military Campaign Chest

Provenance: 4th Battalion Suffolk Regiment Officers' Mess

Part of the personal collection of Christopher Hurst Antiques, Woodbridge.

An exceptionally rare mid 19th Century military campaign chest of small proportions, constructed from finely figured satin birch.

(Military & campaign trunks were almost always constructed of teak, camphor wood or mahogany). I believe this chest was a one-off special order.

Regimental stamp to the rear of the chest.

Constructed several decades before its regimental service with the 4th Suffolk Battalion, this bespoke chest features advanced, high grade 19th Century engineering designed to withstand active field deployment.

The hand dovetailed drawers are built with traditional moulded quadrant drawer slips & feature early, specialised laminated multi-ply drawer bottoms. This was a premium cabinet making technique utilised by highly regarded makers like Ross & Co. of Dublin as early as the mid 19th Century to prevent splitting in volatile climates.

The right hand side of the chest retains its original slotted fittings designed to anchor a modular attachment, such as a field desk or secretaire gallery.

The brass hardware is of exceptional quality, featuring foundry made flush recessed handles & heavy corner brackets hand finished with softened, rounded points.

Fully restored in our workshop, all the drawers run beautifully smooth & the chest is clean throughout, ready for use.

Height: 81cm

Width: 83cm

Depth: 39cm

A mid 19th-century military campaign chest constructed from golden, finely figured satin birch with a warm natural timber tone. The case stands on turned wooden bun feet and features flush recessed brass handles on each of the three graduated drawers, alongside heavy protective brass corner brackets on the top and bottom edges. The front shows key escutcheons centred on each drawer tier. Measuring 81 cm high, 83 cm wide and 39 cm deep, the piece offers compact proportions suited for smaller rooms. Practical storage is provided by the three wide drawers, which run smoothly within the frame. The robust construction makes the chest suitable for everyday use as a bedside table, hallway storage unit or small chest of drawers in a bedroom or study, bringing functional character to traditional or modern interiors alike.

A military campaign chest is a piece of portable storage furniture originally designed to be dismantled and transported by officers during military travel and overseas deployments during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Campaign chests were typically constructed from robust hardwoods such as mahogany, teak, camphorwood, or figured woods like satin birch, reinforced with solid brass corner mounts and flush-fitting handles to prevent damage during transit.

Authentic pieces feature inset brass hardware, flush handles, protective corner straps, and often split into two distinct sections for mobility, occasionally bearing original maker plates from British military outfitters.

These chests serve effectively as versatile bedside tables, hallway console storage, or focal point dressers, pairing well with both traditional tailored decor and modern minimalist schemes.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and nourish the wood with natural beeswax paste, while avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that could affect the original lacquer or oxidised brass patination.
