This 18th century Georgian oak chest of drawers is a practical piece of antique English country house furniture, finished in a warm brown colour with a figured grain timber. The construction includes a moulded edge top and crossbanded drawer fronts arranged in a configuration of two short drawers above three graduated long drawers. Each drawer is fitted with brass swan-neck handles on circular backplates, accompanied by oval brass escutcheons and keyhole covers. Architectural detailing is provided by quarter-fluted or reeded corner columns flanking the front, while the base rests on classic bracket feet. Measuring 93.5 cm high, 115 cm wide and 56.5 cm deep, the chest offers substantial storage capacity for domestic environments. It functions effectively as a storage unit for clothing, linens or household items in a bedroom, hallway or living room today.

FAQs

A Georgian oak chest of drawers dates from the eighteenth or early nineteenth century and typically features solid oak construction, a balanced proportions scheme, and classical detailing such as bracket feet or quarter-column corners.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid English or Welsh oak, incorporating hand-carved dovetail joints, pine or oak drawer linings, and cast brass swan-neck or bail handles.

Authentic pieces feature hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut uneven dovetail joints, original brass escutcheons, and natural shrinkage gaps in the drawer bottoms consistent with aged wood.

Place the piece in an entry hallway or bedroom to contrast structured antique woodwork against contemporary art, neutral wall shades, and minimal modern lighting.

Apply high-grade natural beeswax twice a year along the grain, keep the wood away from direct heat sources, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber movement.
