Description

Beautiful 19th-Century French Bronze Sculpture of a Classical Female Nude

Brief Description:

This is a magnificent and beautifully modelled antique bronze sculpture depicting an elegant classical female nude, dating from the 19th century.

A wonderfully expressive and romantic composition, the finely modelled female figure is portrayed gracefully seated upon a naturalistic rocky outcrop, her slender body gently arched as she gazes upwards towards her elegantly raised hand.

The striking pose conveys a wonderful sense of movement, femininity and emotion, reflecting the artistic ideals of the French Romantic and academic sculptural traditions of the 19th century.

Particularly appealing is the accomplished modelling of the figure, with beautifully rendered facial features, intricately detailed flowing hair and graceful anatomical contours.

Of a very good weight, the sculpture retains a wonderfully rich, dark bronze patina, with attractive warmer highlights that beautifully accentuate the contours of the figure and the intricate surface detailing.

The naturalistic rocky setting provides a delightful contrast to the smooth modelling of the female form, adding considerable depth and character to the composition.

The entire sculpture is raised upon an attractive, substantial, circular marble plinth, beautifully veined in contrasting shades of dark brown, black and warm golden tones.

This nineteenth-century French bronze sculpture depicts a classical female nude seated upon a naturalistic rocky outcrop, her slender body arched as she gazes upward with one arm raised. The cast bronze composition has a dark brown patinated finish with warmer highlights, set atop a veined circular marble plinth in contrasting shades of black and golden tones. The figural sculpture measures 29.4 cm high, 17.7 cm wide, and 10.9 cm deep. Suitable for placement on a mantelpiece in a traditional living room, study, or hallway, this decorative piece adds academic sculptural style to interior spaces. The detailed facial features, flowing hair, and textured rocky base contribute to the romantic aesthetic. Two small cracks mark the circular marble base, while the bronze figure remains in original condition.

FAQs

19th-century French classical bronzes often feature allegorical, mythological, or anatomical subjects executed with high technical precision. Influenced by Neoclassicism and Romanticism, these works frequently display smooth drapery, expressive poses, and rich dark patinas.

Most French 19th-century bronzes were cast using either the lost-wax (cire perdue) process or sand casting techniques. The metal cast was subsequently hand-chiselled to refine detail before a chemical patina was applied and mounted onto marble or stone bases.

Authentic period pieces typically demonstrate precise hand-chiselling, substantial weight, and natural wear to the patina around handled areas. Look for foundry marks, artist signatures, or cold stamps alongside authentic construction details beneath the base.

A dark bronze figure provides visual weight and contrast when placed on light marble mantelpieces, wooden sideboards, or stone pedestals. Pairing classical statuary with minimalist modern furniture highlights the architectural silhouette and tactile quality of the metal.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural hair brush. To protect the patina from oxidation and humidity, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently once dry, avoiding water and chemical cleaners.
