This seventeenth-century Jacobean oak four-poster bed arrives in a dark brown finish with a very deep patina and shine. The dark timber construction exhibits extensive relief carving, including geometric carved panels on the headboard, carved face masks atop the tall turned corner posts, and mouldings along the panelled footboard and headboard. The structure stands on straight upright posts supporting the footboard and high headboard. New slats and an optional mattress accompany the frame. Measuring 198 cm high, 138 cm wide, and 198 cm deep, this sleeping furniture functions as a central bedroom centrepiece for a domestic principal bedroom. The bed provides a traditional focal point in spaces styled with period or gothic revival aesthetics.

A tester bed, commonly developed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, features a high wooden framework or posts designed to support a fabric canopy or solid wooden top. Originally created to retain heat and offer privacy in drafty chambers, these bedsteads served as central feature pieces in period bedchambers.

Bedsteads from this era were primarily constructed from native English oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. Carvings were executed by hand directly into solid timber panels, featuring turned posts, geometric mouldings, and sculpted figurative motifs.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-hewn wood surfaces, irregular tool marks, and wooden dowels or pegs rather than modern screws. Look for natural shrinkage across wide timber panels, dark patination in recesses, and signs of historic alterations where frame dimensions were adjusted over time.

Balance the visual weight and dark tones of heavy oak by pairing the bed with neutral crisp linen bedding and plain light walls. Incorporate modern bedside lighting and simple minimalist rugs to highlight the detailed woodwork without cluttering the room.

Dust the wood regularly using a soft, dry cloth to prevent build-up in deep carvings. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the moisture content of the oak, avoiding chemical sprays, direct sunlight, and placement near central heating radiators.
