This nineteenth-century country house sofa follows a Victorian style attributed to Miles & Edwards, originating from England around 1850. The piece possesses a buttoned hessian back, dark navy seat cushions filled with down and feathers, and a sprung structure retaining its original horsehair. Bulbous turned walnut legs support the frame, terminating in original gilt lacquered brass castors. Visible details include rolled arms with exposed wooden structures, a natural hessian texture across the body, and visible wear appropriate for an item awaiting a new topcoat. Measuring 208.5 cm wide by 86.5 cm deep and 61 cm high, this seating option suits placement within a traditional living room, drawing room, or study. It functions well as a central gathering seat for relaxation or reading while providing historical character to an interior.

Country house sofas from this era are characterized by their deep proportions, low profile, curved or scroll arms, and sturdy wooden frames. Designed primarily for comfort in informal sitting rooms, they feature traditional joinery and visible turned or tapered legs with brass castors.

Frames were built using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, beech, or oak. The internal upholstery relied on natural materials including hand-tied steel coil springs, coconut fibre, horsehair padding, heavy jute webbing, and hessian calico covers.

Authentic period pieces often feature stamped maker marks or inventory numbers on the rear legs or metal castors. Construction indicators include hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, genuine brass stamped castors, and heavy hardwood framing rather than modern softwoods.

A classic sofa can act as an anchor in contemporary spaces by pairing its traditional silhouette with modern textured fabrics like linen or velvet. Placing it alongside minimalist lighting or contemporary artwork creates an intentional contrast between historic architecture and modern design.

Exposed timber legs should be treated regularly with natural beeswax paste to retain moisture and prevent drying. Keep the frame away from direct heat sources and sunlight to protect both the wood and internal natural padding.
