This small early 19th-century French Empire style chest of drawers dates to c.1820. The piece is constructed with a warm brown mahogany timber, featuring symmetrical flame mahogany veneers on the top and the four graduated drawers, complemented by oak groundwork, drawer linings, and a back board. Decorative details include an overhanging top drawer, flank pilasters with turned columns fitted with chased brass mounts, large gilded brass rosette drawer knobs, keyhole escutcheoning, and original black feet. Measuring 53.5 cm high, 98 cm wide, and 86.5 cm deep, the chest offers compact storage suitable for various rooms throughout a modern home. The finished surfaces have been cleaned and waxed, preserving the wood's grain and the metal hardware.

Empire style furniture originated in France during the early nineteenth century under Napoleon Bonaparte, characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, rich flame mahogany veneers, and architectural flank columns.

Nineteenth-century Empire chests were predominantly constructed using solid timber frames lined with highly figured mahogany veneers, complemented by brass decorative hardware and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original locks with escutcheons, architectural side columns or pilasters, flame mahogany veneer cut across timber grain, and natural wear to interior surfaces.

An Empire chest functions as a focal anchor point when placed against neutral wall finishes, balanced with understated modern artwork, structural ceramics, or clean-lined brass lighting fixtures.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax twice annually, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sudden atmospheric humidity changes to prevent veneer lifting.
