An Early 19th Century Mahogany French Empire Commode

19th century
Description

A superb early 19th century French Empire commode of elegant proportions, crafted in finely figured mahogany and surmounted by its original Carrara marble top.

The beautifully figured frieze conceals a discreet drawer, centred by an ornate gilt-brass foliate mount, above three generously proportioned drawers veneered in richly patterned flame mahogany. Each drawer is adorned with original gilt-brass escutcheons and circular handles, retaining the refined classical symmetry synonymous with the Empire period.

The cabinet is flanked by imposing free-standing columns mounted with finely cast gilt-brass capitals and bases, lending the piece architectural strength and sophistication. Raised on turned cylindrical feet, the commode displays the restrained grandeur inspired by the age of Napoleon, while the exceptional mahogany veneers create a striking visual impact.

Both practical and decorative, this elegant commode would make a wonderful statement piece in a bedroom, hallway, drawing room or country house interior.

Surface oxidisation and dark grime on the back: long undisturbed exposure to air.
White marble top with soft edge wear: historic stonework cut to fit.

Originating during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte in the early nineteenth century, French Empire furniture is defined by architectural silhouettes, symmetrical proportions, neoclassical column supports, and polished flame mahogany veneers paired with gilt-bronze or brass mounts.

These commodes typically feature solid oak or pine carcasses veneered with high-grade flame mahogany, crowned with imported marble tops, and detailed with brass or gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and escutcheons.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, thick hand-sawn wood veneers, hand-chased metal mounts, and original marble slabs showing age-appropriate wear on the underside.

Position the piece as an anchor in a hallway, dining room, or bedroom to contrast structured historic woodwork against clean contemporary wall finishes and contemporary artwork.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply clear beeswax polish annually, while keeping marble tops clean using pH-neutral soap solutions and avoiding acidic liquids that cause etching.
