Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Art Deco desk tidy from the 1920s combines a cold-painted bronze Scottish Terrier figure with a carved pale green onyx base. The dark brown patinated dog stands on top of the round stone dish, which has natural veining and polished surfaces alongside a recessed storage well at the front and a rough-textured edge. The underside retains its green paper finish, and the entire piece measures 9.5 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. Place this accessory on an office desk or library table to store small stationery items while adding a decorative touch to the workspace. The green and brown tones complement traditional or vintage-inspired interiors, providing a functional focal point for daily use.

FAQs

A cold-painted bronze desk tidy is a small tabletop accessory featuring a bronze figure painted with oil-based enamel paints after casting rather than being fired in a kiln. These figures were frequently mounted onto polished stone bases, such as onyx or marble, to serve as decorative trays for small items.

During the 1920s, desk accessories were commonly crafted using cast metals such as bronze, brass, or spelter, paired with carved mineral bases like onyx, alabaster, or marble. Cold-painted techniques were used to add detailed colours to figurative accents.

Authentic 1920s cold-painted bronzes display subtle surface wear where the paint layer has naturally rubbed away over time, revealing the underlying patinated bronze. Castings from this period generally feature fine, hand-chased surface texture and substantial weight relative to their size.

An onyx desk tidy can be placed on a home office desk, bookshelf, or hallway console table to store paperclips, keys, or jewellery. The combination of natural stone and cast metal provides a structured accent piece that suits modern, classic, or eclectic decor schemes.

Dust the item gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush to prevent stripping the delicate cold-painted surface layer. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, water, or abrasive polishes on both the bronze casting and the porous onyx base.
