Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. This early 20th century English Country sideboard is constructed from oak with a dark brown finish and brass hardware. The rectangular top has a moulded edge, sitting above three central drawers fitted with decorative brass drop handles and flanked by two cupboard doors with arched panels and brass hinges. The timber displays a prominent grain and rich colour throughout. Four sturdy upright legs support the solid structure at the base. The sideboard measures 86.5 cm high, 175.5 cm wide and 41.5 cm deep. Positioned in a dining room, living room or hallway, this piece provides practical storage space for tableware, linens or everyday items while adding a traditional aesthetic to the interior. The flat top surface accommodates lamps, decorative objects or serving trays during gatherings. The combination of enclosed cabinet storage and central drawer organisation suits daily household routines.

FAQs

Sideboards evolved in the 18th century as serving tables in dining rooms, designed to display silver, hold serving dishes, and store linen and cutlery. Oak sideboards remained popular across centuries due to the durability of the wood and its association with traditional English craftsmanship.

Traditional oak sideboards are constructed using solid timber joined with mortise and tenon joints, dovetail drawer construction, and tongue-and-groove paneling. Hardware typically consists of solid brass drop handles, backplates, and external hinges.

Authentic period pieces show natural wood shrinkage, uneven hand-planed surfaces, hand-cut dovetails inside drawers, and age-appropriate patination around handles and keyholes. Original brass fittings will exhibit subtle oxidisation and wear rather than uniform modern finishes.

A dark oak sideboard serves as a grounding focal point when positioned against neutral walls or contrasting paint shades. Modern interiors often balance the visual weight of dark timber with contemporary artwork, oversized lamps, or ceramic vessels placed along the surface top.

Maintain the finish by applying a quality beeswax polish twice a year, buffing gently along the direction of the wood grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, warping, or fading.
