Regency Mahogany Bow-fronted Chest of Drawers

19th century
For Sale by The Old Cinema
Description

An antique mahogany chest with a gently bowed front, four graduated drawers and a restrained architectural frame. The warm-toned timber displays a fine, even grain across the top and drawer fronts, while the projecting moulded top follows the curvature of the case. Fluted corner columns frame the façade and continue into slender turned and tapered feet, giving the piece a balanced vertical emphasis without adding unnecessary ornament. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of oval brass plate handles and a central keyhole, the aged metal providing a subtle contrast against the polished mahogany.

A Regency bow-fronted chest of drawers is characterized by its outward convex curving front, popularised during the early nineteenth century in Britain. These pieces typically emphasize classical proportions, flame mahogany veneers, reeded or fluted pilasters, and brass hardware.

Regency cabinetmakers favoured solid mahogany and rich mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcases. Drawers usually feature hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine drawer linings, and turned or bracket feet with solid brass handles.

Authentic Regency chests display hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, original iron lock mechanisms, and uneven timber shrinkage on the rear pine boards. Look for reeded column details, cockbeading around drawer edges, and natural aging around brass backplates.

A mahogany chest of drawers offers a grounding element in contemporary spaces when paired with clean neutral walls and modern art. Top the surface with minimalist ceramic lighting or modern glassware to balance traditional woodwork.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth along the grain. Preserve the wood patina by applying a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding silicon-based sprays and direct heat sources.
