Antique Small Georgian Mahogany Four Drawer Chest of Drawers with Brushing Slide

18th century
Description

This superb antique small Georgian mahogany four drawer chest of drawers with brushing slide dates from around 1780 and is a wonderful example of fine late eighteenth-century English craftsmanship. Beautifully proportioned and exceptionally versatile, it retains its original brass swan neck handles, original locks, original bracket feet and the highly desirable original pull-out brushing slide.

Crafted from beautifully figured solid mahogany, the chest has acquired a rich mellow patina over more than 240 years. The moulded top sits above the practical brushing slide, providing additional display or working space before leading to four graduated drawers offering generous storage. The original brass swan neck handles and escutcheons complement the elegant proportions and authentic Georgian character.

Raised on its original shaped bracket feet, this charming chest is perfectly suited for use in a bedroom, hallway, sitting room or study. Its compact size makes it ideal for modern homes whilst still providing excellent storage, and the brushing slide offers additional practicality for displaying decorative objects, serving drinks or everyday use.

Georgian chests of this size and quality, retaining so many original features, are becoming increasingly difficult to source. This is a particularly attractive example combining timeless design, practicality and outstanding craftsmanship.

Condition

Excellent antique condition with age-related wear, marks and a beautiful mellow patina consistent with over 240 years of use. The drawers run smoothly, the brushing slide operates correctly and the chest retains its original brass swan neck handles, locks and bracket feet. A solid, sturdy and ready-to-use example.

Georgian chests of drawers, produced between 1714 and 1830, are characterised by classical proportions, high-quality mahogany or walnut construction, brass drop handles, and functional features such as brushing slides or graduated drawers.

Primary timbers typically included solid or veneered mahogany and walnut, with oak or pine used as secondary timber for drawer linings. Hardware was generally cast from brass using traditional moulding methods.

Authentic Georgian pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn secondary timbers showing uneven marks, period brass hardware, and natural wear patterns along drawer runners and base feet.

A compact Georgian chest can serve as an entrance hall console, bedside storage, or a living room focal piece, balanced alongside contemporary artwork and modern lighting.

Maintain mahogany by positioning it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth, and applying beeswax polish sparingly to protect the wood finish.
