Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Pegged mortise and tenon joints on the frame: traditional country joinery without metal screws.
Hand-cut dovetails on thick oak drawer linings: hand cabinet work before machine cutting.
Rough-hewn single-plank backboard: timber dressed by hand before modern sawmills.
Shrinkage gap between the top planks: natural movement across the grain over centuries.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. It provides surface display space alongside closed storage drawers for everyday household items.

FAQs

An 18th-century oak dresser base is a functional wooden storage cabinet or low side table featuring a row of drawers above a decorative apron, originally used for serving and storage in period homes.

These pieces were crafted primarily from solid native oak timber, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, mortise and tenon joinery with wooden pegs, and brass hardware such as knobs or escutcheons.

Authentic period examples show evidence of hand-planed timber, irregular hand-cut dovetails, original peg joinery, and natural age-related wear or shrinkage across drawer runners and surface boards.

Position the dresser base in an entry hallway or dining room as a console table, pairing its historic wood tones with modern table lamps, artwork, or minimalist ceramics to create visual balance.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice per year, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and extreme moisture to protect the historic patina.
