French Rosewood Commode

Description

A stunning well proportioned Rosewood Secretaire Commode from the late 19th century in excellent condition

Gorgeous rosewood veneers with bold, crisp mouldings throughout. Hand turned solid Rosewood handles, bung feet and pilasters. Original working brass key and brass escutcheons. Very well designed and made.

Top drawer is a secretaire, with pigeon hole drawers and lined with a brown, gold leaf tooled leather hide.

4 further drawers including secret bottom drawer which appears as part of the plinth structure.

This is a great example of fine luxury Parisian cabinetry attributed to one of the big names of the special 2nd Empire era. The characteristics of this special piece almost certainly suggest it was made by C H Jeanselme, a top furniture maker to French Royalty, Napoleon III and other aristocracy. There is no stamp or makers label but it could of been lost or removed.

The contrast of the rich Rosewood and the solid Birds Eye Maple interior and drawer linings are a clear attribute of this maker and a mark of luxury and quality.

In great original order, drawers are all solid and run nicely and all the Birds eye maple linings are sound. .Locks all working.

There is no worm or rot anywhere.

This is approximately 150 years old but it shows no signs of wear or age further emphasising the sustainable quality of the design, manufacture and source of high end materials.
