GEORGE SYDNEY SHEPHERD (1784 -1862) - EXHIBITION SIZE WATERCOLOUR OF A HARE AND GAME.

A fine, large scale and highly detailed sporting study executed in watercolour and bodycolour (gouache) on paper with soft cross-hatching and fine stippling, typical of Shepherd's precise draughtsmanship.

It features a traditional "dead game" trophies arrangement featuring a hare suspended by its hind legs, alongside a pheasant and a lapwing (peewit) placed on a rocky ground ledger.

In addition a percussion-cap sporting shotgun leans vertically behind the game against a rugged, autumnal outdoor embankment.

Shepherd was a prominent British draughtsman and watercolourist best known for his detailed topographical, architectural, and landscape scenes of London and surrounding English counties. He was a founding member of the New Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1831.

With dimensions of 52cm x 66 cm, this is a particularly large, fully realised exhibition-scale work for Shepherd, whose standard output consists mainly of smaller architectural and topographical watercolours.
