Description

A magnificent field of glowing, natural turquoise-green dominates the knotted-pile face of this 19th century 'chanteh' or vanity-bag, made by the tribes of the Khamseh Confederacy in south-western Persia. The centre is filled with a large 'eye' and surrounded by stylised flowers. The top opening lappits are woven in complementary weft-weave and the back has multi-coloured horizontal bands in plain-weave technique.

A rare and beautiful little chanteh.

A Khamseh tribal bagface is the hand-knotted or woven front panel of a small storage pouch or saddlebag crafted by nomadic tribes within the Khamseh Confederacy in South-West Persia. These pieces were built for practical transport during seasonal migrations and feature distinctive geometric iconography.
