Description

An exceptional antique Heriz carpet, woven circa 1920. The design features a large geometrical medallion on a rich terracotta field surrounded by a classic deep blue border. The design is very unusual with the scrolling vines in the field and the medallion is particularly beautiful. Very attractive secondary colours of greens, pinks and blues and particularly the gold in the medallion. A highly decorative carpet.

Size: 3.68m x 2.65m (12ft 1in x 8ft 8in)

This rug is in good condition with light, age related wear. Fringes and selvedges are secure and it has been professionally cleaned.

Originating from the Heriz region in Northwest Iran, these carpets are celebrated for their bold, rectilinear medallion designs and expansive corner spandrels. Woven by village weavers, they combine traditional tribal geometry with formal Persian carpet layouts.

Heriz carpets are hand-knotted using durable hand-spun wool pile woven onto a thick cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool is dyed using natural vegetable and plant extracts, resulting in rich terracotta reds, indigo blues, and ivory tones.

Authentic Heriz pieces feature symmetrical double-knot construction with a lower knot density that creates stylized, angular patterns rather than curvilinear designs. Variations in colour, known as abrash, along with slight geometric asymmetry, indicate natural hand-dying and artisan weaving.
