19th Century French Louis Xv Style Marquetry Bonheur-du-jour, Circa 1870

19th century
Description

A decorative late 19th century French Louis XV style marquetry bonheur-du-jour, dating to circa 1870.

Of elegant serpentine form, the desk is finely decorated throughout with floral marquetry and line inlay, the fall front centred by an attractive arrangement of flowers and foliage.

The raised superstructure is fitted with two small drawers beneath a three-quarter pierced brass gallery. The fall front opens to reveal a fitted interior with small drawers and compartments and a tooled leather writing surface.

The shaped frieze is further embellished with floral marquetry, the whole raised on four slender cabriole legs terminating in decorative gilt-metal sabots.

A particularly pretty and useful piece of French furniture, its relatively compact proportions making it ideal as a writing desk, occasional desk or decorative feature in a bedroom or sitting room.

French, circa 1870.

There is some age-related wear, fading and marks to the timber and writing surface, consistent with its age and use.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century France, a bonheur-du-jour is a compact type of ladies writing desk, typically featuring a slant front or raised cabinet with drawers, designed for writing letters and storing personal items.

Louis XV style furniture traditionally incorporates fine hardwoods such as walnut, rosewood, and kingwood, embellished with floral timber marquetry inlay and cast brass or bronze mounts.

Pieces from this era exhibit hand-fitted drawer joinery, genuine veneer marquetry work, delicate cabriole legs, and age-consistent patina on metal galleries and timber surfaces.

Position the piece in a quiet reading corner, hallway, or bedroom nook to serve as an accent writing table, allowing its ornate silhouette to contrast against contemporary minimalist backdrops.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and moisture to prevent veneer lifting, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly.
