1940 - 1960
Description

After Jean-Baptiste Greuze 1725-1805 French

Impressive large mixed media Oileograph portrait of a young boy holding a basket of fruit and about to choose an apple.

Produced in the 1960’s influenced by 19th Century Manner

with the appearance of a museum masterpiece.

The picture is produced on canvas and has been finished with mixed media of inks and hand embellished in oil paint and clear gesso laid on in stages and layers to produce a finish with depth, texture and realism, which is known as an Oileograph.

An oileograph is a method of mounting an high quality coloured lithograph onto real canvas in order to produce a visual finish virtually indistinguishable from the original old masters and are finished to a very high standard.

FRAME

Mounted within this magnificent heavy duty antique style ornate swept gilt frame which greatly enhances the portrait. The frame is an expensive gallery standard example which would have cost a considerable sum to purchase, around £400 or so.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An oleograph is a chromolithograph printed on canvas or cloth-backed paper designed to imitate the colour, texture, and appearance of an oil painting, gaining popularity in the nineteenth century.

Embellished oleographs are constructed using lithographic inks printed onto canvas or heavy paper, which are then enhanced with hand-applied clear varnish or oil paints and mounted in moulded gilt frames.

Authentic oleographs feature a printed canvas pattern or fine dot-matrix grid visible under magnification, topped with raised varnish lines that mimic brushstrokes rather than true built-up oil paint layers.

Position a gilt-framed classical portrait centrally above a sideboard or mantelpiece to create a focal point, or integrate it into an eclectic gallery wall alongside contemporary line drawings.

Dust the surface and frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush, keeping the item away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and liquid cleaning agents.
