Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Louis XV style desktop cartonnier displays a warm brown rosewood veneer finish. The serpentine profile houses open compartmentalised shelving arranged in an upper central division and lower sections, complemented by shaped cresting and gilded ormolu mounts along the top and feet. Visible details include decorative bronze ormolu mounts, raised side supports, and angled vertical dividers framing the timber grain. Measuring 74 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 26 cm deep, the piece sits neatly upon a surface. Suitable for use in a home office or study today, the cartonnier provides practical desktop organisation for papers, letters, or stationery. It sits directly upon a writing desk or flat surface, introducing period French character and functional storage to a workspace while keeping documents close at hand.

FAQs

Dust wood surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain to maintain the finish. Ormolu mounts should be gently dusted and kept free from harsh chemical cleaners to preserve the original gilding and patina.

A desktop cartonnier can be placed atop a modern study desk, console table, or sideboard to store mail, stationery, or small items while adding mid-to-late 19th-century French architectural detail.

Authentic 19th-century Louis XV revival pieces exhibit characteristic Rococo features including serpentine curves, asymmetrical floral or acanthus leaf ormolu mounts, hand-cut dovetail joints, and hand-cut veneer work.

Louis XV style cartonniers are traditionally constructed using fine hardwoods such as rosewood, kingwood, or walnut veneers. They frequently feature cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and shaped partitions.

A cartonnier is a specialised piece of French office furniture or desk accessory designed to hold papers, files, and documents in separate compartments. Smaller desktop versions were created to sit directly on writing tables to provide organized storage within easy reach.
