Regency Mahogany Pedestal Sideboard Figured Mahogany C.1820

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A handsome Regency mahogany pedestal sideboard of elegant proportions, with particularly attractive figured mahogany drawer fronts and good colour.

The raised scroll-form back is centred by a carved shell motif, above a long central frieze drawer flanked by a pair of deep drawers. Each pedestal incorporates a panelled cupboard door. The pedestal cupboards are enclosed by panelled doors framed by finely turned spiral columns. The sideboard retains brass ring handles and is raised on square tapering legs terminating in castors.

A particularly useful example of the Regency pedestal sideboard, combining generous storage with relatively compact proportions at 162cm wide and just 47cm deep.

The sideboard separates into sections, making it considerably easier to transport and position within the home.

This Regency pedestal sideboard dates from around 1820 and is fashioned from warm brown mahogany and figured mahogany veneers, complemented by brass hardware. The design incorporates a raised scroll-form back centred by a carved shell motif above a long central frieze drawer and a pair of deep drawers. Each pedestal contains a panelled cupboard door framed by finely turned spiral columns, along with brass ring handles and square tapering legs terminating in castors. The surfaces display marks, knocks, scratches, and wear commensurate with age and use, alongside polished variations to the wood. Measuring 162 cm wide, 47 cm deep, and 109 cm high, the piece separates into sections to assist with transport and positioning. It functions effectively in a dining room or living space to provide generous storage for tableware, linens, or serving items while maintaining a compact footprint against a wall.

A pedestal sideboard from the Regency period, produced between roughly 1811 and 1830, features a central recessed table or drawer section flanked by two raised pedestal cupboards, often designed to store dining room essentials.

Regency sideboards were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany and flame or figured mahogany veneers, often featuring cast brass hardware and turned or carved timber details.

Authentic Regency sideboards display early nineteenth-century construction hallmarks, including hand-cut dovetail joints, authentic timber oxidisation inside drawers, original brass fittings, and era-appropriate turned or reeded columns.

To integrate a dark mahogany Regency sideboard into contemporary decor, pair it with light-coloured or neutral backdrop walls, large-scale modern artwork mounted above the gallery back, and simple ceramic accessories.

Maintain mahogany antiques by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice per year to protect the original finish, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators.
