Fine George II Walnut Chest on Chest with Line Inlay

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

This is an elegant George II figured walnut chest on chest, dating from the mid-18th century and displaying attractive figured walnut veneers throughout.

The moulded cornice sits above an upper section fitted with three short and three long oak-lined drawers, over a lower section with three further long drawers. The drawer fronts are decorated with fine line inlay forming elegant intersecting curves, together with crossbanding and featherbanding, and the chest stands on shaped bracket feet.

The attractive walnut veneers and refined inlaid decoration give the piece a sophisticated appearance, while the well-balanced proportions make it equally suitable for a period or contemporary interior. The drawers are oak lined, reflecting the quality of its original construction.

A handsome and practical mid-18th century chest on chest offering generous storage and excellent decorative appeal.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 177cm

Width: 107cm

Depth: 54cm

CONDITION

There are the expected light marks, knocks and surface wear associated with age and use.

There are historic patch repairs to the veneers and mouldings, together with a small number of old woodworm holes. The bottom right-hand corner of the lowest drawer has been historically re-glued and sits very slightly proud. There are minor age-related shrinkage splits to both sides and small gaps around some drawer fronts, consistent with the age of the piece. The handles are old replacements.

The drawers run freely, the joints remain sound and the chest has a rich colour with attractive figured walnut veneers, presenting well overall as a quality mid-18th century piece.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George II chest on chest, also called a tallboy, is a two-part wooden storage cabinet dating from the reign of King George II (17271760). It features an upper chest resting atop a slightly wider lower chest, designed to maximize storage while utilizing vertical wall space.

Eighteenth-century English chest on chests were typically constructed from solid walnut or oak framed with fine burr walnut, mahogany, or fruitwood veneers. Decorative elements often incorporated feather or crossbanded string inlay and sand-cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer construction, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, natural shrinkage signs, and hand-cast brass handles. Original surfaces display uneven, deep patination and subtle wood movement along construction seams.

Position a tall chest on chest against a neutral wall to allow the rich timber grain to anchor the room visually. Complement the historic woodwork by pairing it with simple contemporary artwork, structured linen textiles, and understated lighting.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year along the grain. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, and sudden changes in humidity to prevent wood shrinkage or veneer lifting.
