Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French armoires originated in the 16th century as substantial wooden cupboards used to store clothing, linens, and household valuables. By the 18th century, regional cabinetmakers created distinct provincial styles, often painting the timber in pale tones and incorporating mirrored panel doors to maximize light within grand bedroom chambers.

Traditional French armoires were constructed using hardwoods such as oak, walnut, beech, or fruitwood. Painted variants often featured hand-applied distemper or oil paints over a timber frame, completed with hand-cut mirrored glass panels, brass escutcheons, and iron lock mechanisms.

Authentic French armoires typically feature hand-carved details such as arched cornices, decorative aprons, and cabriole legs. Look for traditional joinery like hand-cut dovetails, original brass or iron hardware, pegged construction, and signs of natural age on the timber backing and interior shelves.

A pair of painted armoires can be placed symmetrically flanking a doorway or placed in a principal bedroom suite to add height and structure. The neutral painted finish pairs seamlessly with natural linen textiles, soft wool rugs, and warm brass decorative accents to create a balanced scheme.

Dust painted surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent dirt build-up. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive sprays; use glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than the mirror itself to protect surrounding paintwork and silvering.
