This Victorian fire screen dates to 1880 in the Arts and Crafts style, constructed from brass, lead and stained glass. The rectangular frame contains multicoloured panels of red, blue, green and white glass arranged in a geometric layout around a central roundel. The roundel displays a hand-painted bird perched among foliage against a yellow ground. The polished brass framework includes an integrated arched top handle and stands upon four splayed scroll feet. The piece measures 58 cm high and 46 cm wide. Positioned on a fireplace hearth, the screen provides a decorative barrier in front of an open fire. The stained glass panels diffuse natural or artificial light when the hearth is unlit, adding colour to the room. The brass frame and hardware coordinate with other traditional fireplace accessories in a living room, study or bedroom setting.
