Pair of 19th Century Italian Grand Tour Gypsum Intaglio Cameo Panels

19th century
Description

A fine and rare matched pair of 19th century Italian Grand Tour souvenir panels, each housing a symmetrical arrangement of approximately twenty-one cast gypsum (plaster) intaglio and cameo medallions depicting classical subjects. Likely produced in Rome or Florence during the height of the Grand Tour trade, these panels were made as collectible keepsakes for European travellers, reproducing celebrated antique and neoclassical gems held in the great museum and private collections of the day.

Each panel presents a large central oval medallion — a bearded classical male portrait bust in profile, bound with a fillet, flanked by two further oval busts of similar scale — surrounded by a graduated arrangement of smaller ovals and roundels. The subjects include profile portraits of philosophers, emperors, and mythological figures, jugate (conjoined) double portraits, narrative scenes with paired standing figures, full-length classical nudes, and one medallion bearing an inscribed tablet. The variation in carving style across the medallions is consistent with casts taken from a range of different antique originals, as was typical of period souvenir sets.

The medallions are mounted in individually finished gilt-metal collars against a burgundy fabric ground, and presented within two-tone giltwood and lacquered frames with a stepped ogee gilt inner edge, glazed, and backed. The panels form a well-balanced pair, sharing a closely related composition and medallion selection — a desirable configuration for Grand Tour collections of this type, which were frequently produced and sold as pendant sets.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Grand Tour gypsum intaglios are small plaster cast impressions of engraved gems, classical coins, and relief sculptures collected by eighteenth and nineteenth-century travellers visiting Italy and Greece as educational souvenirs.

They were produced by pouring liquid gypsum into moulds taken directly from carved gemstone seals or ancient artifacts. Once dry, the edges were wrapped in gilt paper strips before being mounted onto velvet or card inside glazed wooden frames.

Genuine examples feature sharp relief detail, subtle natural discolouration, traditional gilt paper rims around each cast, and period shadowbox framing with hand-blown glass.

Designers mount framed intaglio collections as focal points above consoles or sideboards, feature them within dark academic library settings, or group them in symmetrical gallery walls to introduce classical texture.

Keep plaster intaglios sealed behind glass in dry, moisture-controlled environments to prevent gypsum softening. Clean the wooden frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid using liquid cleaners near unglazed plaster.
