An Oil Painting on Canvas by Lucy Pratt 'Red Sails, Salcombe

Later than 1960
Description

We are offering to you this Beautiful Oil Painting on Canvas.

LUCY PRATT (BRITISH B.1970): AN OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS 'RED SAILS, SALCOMBE

This is a vibrant, impressionistic oil painting by Lucy Pratt depicting a sunny coastal scene at Salcombe (likely the South Devon estuary/harbour area).

The composition centres on a sheltered sandy beach backed by steep, lush green hills and dense woodland in rich greens, yellows, and darker tones.

Nestled among the trees and rocks are a few white-walled houses with reddish roofs. A few small figures appear on the beach, and blue beach huts or umbrellas line part of the shore.

In the foreground and mid-ground, lively blue-green water is rendered with loose, energetic brushstrokes that capture movement and reflections.

Several small sailing boats with bright red sails (and one smaller blue boat) float on the water, their reds reflecting strongly in the sea.

The sky above is a soft mix of pale yellow, cream, and grey-lavender clouds, suggesting late afternoon or early evening light.

The painting is housed in a substantial cream-coloured frame with a gold/gilt inner moulding.

The artist’s signature is visible in the lower left corner of the canvas.

Overall it has a bright, cheerful, post-Impressionist feel bold colour, visible brushwork, and a strong sense of place and summer light typical of Lucy Pratt’s coastal subjects.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Contemporary British coastal impressionism focuses on capturing the light, movement, and colours of the UK coastline. Artists use expressive impasto brushwork and vivid colour palettes to convey the atmosphere of maritime landscapes rather than precise photo-realist detail.

A traditional oil painting consists of oil-based pigments applied to a primed cotton or linen canvas stretched over wooden stretcher bars. The completed artwork is housed within a timber frame, often finished with paint, gesso, or gold leaf.

Authentic oil paintings display distinct textural depth, visible brushstrokes, and layered impasto technique that print reproductions cannot replicate. Examination of the artists signature, gallery labels on the reverse, and stretched canvas construction helps confirm authenticity.

Position the artwork at eye level above a key focal point, such as a sideboard, console table, or fireplace mantelpiece. Complement the paintings colours by incorporating modern furnishings in neutral tones, natural wood, or subtle blue accent textiles.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature changes, and high humidity to prevent fading or canvas distortion. Dust the frame and surface gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solvents.
