Hendrik Valkenberg (1826-1896) Watercolour.

19th century
Description

A very atmospheric watercolour of an interior scene depicting a woman sewing next to her child in a country kitchen. The child sits in a high chair of the period with a toy sheep and lamb. The overall painting has much detail with strong colour and feeling of warmth and peace. It is signed and dated 1877.

The actual size of the painting is 56cm X 42cm. Framed it measures 83cm X 68cm

Hendrik Valkenburg, born in Deventer, Netherlands, in 1826 and passing away in The Hague in 1896, was a painter deeply embedded in the traditions of 19th-century Dutch Realism. While not a name immediately recognized alongside the most celebrated masters, Valkenburg carved out a significant niche for himself through his intimate depictions of genre scenes, portraits, and landscapes—works that offer a poignant glimpse into the everyday lives of his contemporaries.

His artistic journey was one marked by dedicated study, skilful execution, and a commitment to portraying the world around him with both accuracy and emotional resonance. He wasn’t an innovator shattering conventions, but rather a refined interpreter of them, capable of capturing subtle nuances of character and atmosphere.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century Dutch genre watercolour paintings depict everyday domestic interiors and rural life, continuing the regional tradition of capturing detailed domestic scenes and natural interior light.

Artists utilised natural watercolour pigments applied to heavy paper rag, frequently presented within wooden frames behind protective glass and card mounts.

Authentic period watercolours demonstrate natural age-related paper toning, fine hand-painted brushwork, period-appropriate framing materials, and legible artist signatures or monograms.

A framed historical painting can be hung against a neutral or dark feature wall, paired alongside contemporary furnishings and accent lighting to create visual depth.

Display watercolour artworks away from direct sunlight and sources of humidity, ensuring acid-free mounting boards and UV-protective glass are used to prevent fading and foxing.
