Antique Hand Woven Yomut Asmalyk

19th century
Description

This is fabulous antique Asmalyk woven by the Yomut Turkman people in the East Caspian region dating from around 1900. The Asmalyk is hand woven in pure wool and would have been used across a horse or a camel, and would often be made specifically for a wedding, forming part of the bride''s dowry This is one is very finely and skilfully woven in soft wools using only natural vegetable dyes and in fact the colour palette is very pleasing with deep indigo, madder red, ivory and a deeper cinnamon colour featuring. It has a smart geometric design of diamond lattice stepped serrated guls and narrow borders and guard stripes.

Amazingly for its age this is in really excellent condition; it has all of its ties and its many colourful woollen tassels.

This is a wonderfully tactile rug which can of course be used on the floor but also makes a stunning throw over a sofa or chest. It also would make a superb wall hanging.

The piece measures 115 cms by 102 cms

An asmalyk is a traditional arched or five-sided decorative textile panel handwoven by the Yomut tribe of Turkmenistan, historically crafted to adorn camels during wedding processions.

Turkmen weavers traditionally utilised hand-spun sheep wool for both warp and pile, coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes such as madder root for reds and indigo for blues.

Authentic pieces feature natural dye variations known as abrash, hand-knotted wool construction, tribal motifs like diamond lattices or serrated guls, and original hand-tied tassels along the lower border.

Tribal textiles are frequently mounted inside custom frames or hung from discreet rods as wall art, adding geometric texture and rich colour tones to modern rooms.

Display wool textiles away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, vacuum periodically using low suction without a brush bar, and use specialized textile conservators for stain removal.
