Gorgeous Bonheur-Du-Jour Desk - Circa 1870
This piece is an excellent example crafted circa 1870.
Atop this resides a glorious cabinet, complete with pen drawer, which is flanked by butterfly wings mounted with display shelves.

The bonheur du jour (French, "daytime delight") was introduced in Paris by one of the interior decorators and purveyors of fashionable novelties called Marchands-Merciers in about 1760, and speedily became intensely fashionable. The bonheur-du-jour is always very light and graceful; a pleasure to the eye and a joy to use.

A sign of the quality of this bonheur-du-jour is that the cabriole legs are not only graciously detailed, but they are present at the rear of the piece not just the front 'for show'.
The desk drawer slides open to reveal a leather embossed writing surface which itself then slides backwards to expose a spacious storage area for keeping papers and documents. The desk drawer has a fully functioning lock and key.

The upper section flame mahogany is lovely. The door is complete with a fully functioning lock and key and encloses twin shelves and drawer.
A wonderful piece of furniture that is in stunning order throughout.
