Description

A beautiful antique burr walnut leather top kidney shaped desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1920’s period.

The quality is outstanding, this has a beautiful design and is a very practical size. The kidney shaped top has an inset black leather writing surface and walnut banding around the edges. There are five drawers which have detailed brass handles and nicely dovetailed joints. This stands on cabriole legs with shell carving at the knees, the back is also nicely polished, so this can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with just some minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Kidney-shaped desks first gained popularity during the late 18th and 19th centuries, often associated with French and English cabinet-making traditions, designed to offer an ergonomic curve that wrapped comfortably around the user.

Authentic period desks are constructed using solid timber frames overlaid with decorative veneers such as burr walnut, featuring dovetailed drawer construction and inset tooled leather writing surfaces.

Authentication involves inspecting the drawer joints for hand-cut dovetailing, checking for period-appropriate secondary woods, examining the wear on the wooden feet, and assessing the natural ageing and oxidisation of the brass hardware and leather.

Pairing a classic wooden desk with contemporary minimalist seating or placing it against a neutral wall creates a striking focal point that balances historic character with modern clean lines.

Wood surfaces should be treated periodically with microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, while leather inserts require specialized pH-neutral leather creams to prevent drying and cracking over time.
