This pair of eighteenth-century Italian neoclassical side cabinets is executed in ebonised wood with contrasting gold accents. Each rectangular commode incorporates architectural column trusses with ormolu bases and capitals, standing upon square block feet. The dark surfaces are detailed with fine brass inlay, ormolu drawer pulls, escutcheons, and large cast floral-detailed handles upon double panelled doors, behind which sits a single shelf. Each unit measures 98 cm high, 140 cm wide, and 57 cm deep. These grand Regency side cabinets bring formal character to a refined living space, dining room, or hallway. They function well as statement storage pieces, offering surface display space alongside enclosed shelving. The rich black finish and metallic mounts suit traditional or sophisticated contemporary interiors seeking architectural presence and historical styling.

Eighteenth-century Italian ebonised furniture is characterised by dark-stained hardwoods designed to imitate natural ebony, often combined with Neoclassical architectural features such as fluted pilasters, clean geometric proportions, and gilt-metal or brass ornamentation.

Cabinetmakers typically used local dense hardwoods, such as walnut, pearwood, or pine, which were treated with iron-rich stains or dark lacquers. These cabinet frames were frequently adorned with cast brass or ormolu mounts and decorative moulding.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-planed secondary timbers, hand-cut dovetail joints, period-appropriate lock mechanisms, and uneven natural wear to the ebonised finish where the lighter base wood shows through at touch points.

A pair of ebonised cabinets can be arranged symmetrically on either side of a fireplace, doorway, or large artwork to create visual structure, anchoring modern rooms with high-contrast architectural depth.

Maintain ebonised wood by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth and applying a neutral beeswax sparingly to protect the timber surface; avoid solvent-based cleaners and damp cloths, which can lift original dark stains or tarnish metal mounts.
