Antique English Georgian Old Sheffield Plate Mug

18th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

This large and attractive Late 18th Century Antique English Georgian Old Sheffield Plate Mug has obviously had a busy life, but nevertheless still exudes an elusive air of period charm. With it's vertical seam clearly to be seen under the handle running up the body, and though rather less clearly, along the underside of the handle, this fine old piece retains it's original turned wooden inset base and holds just One Litre, equivalent to an Imperial Pint and Three Quarters. This, together with the fact that it was purchased in Spain, raises the question of whether, if it is indeed English, as we believe, it was perhaps destined for export to the Continent, rather than intended for the home market. For a comparable example, see Tom Frost's "The Price Guide to Old Sheffield Plate ~ Page 322 ~ Ref. Tan.7", { A.C.C. Woodbridge 1971 }.

Height ~ 16.00 cm. / 6.25 inches ~ Width ~ 13.00 cm. / 5.15 inches ~ Depth to include handle ~ 17.75 cm. / 7.00 inches ~ Year ~ Circa 1790

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a manufacturing process invented in England in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover, where thin sheets of sterling silver were thermally fused to a central copper ingot before being rolled into sheets and worked into hollowware.

Items were constructed from copper ingots clad in sterling silver, hand-hammered or hand-rolled into form, often featuring applied silver wire rims to conceal exposed copper edges and cast metal handles attached by soldering.

Authentic pieces feature copper bleeding where the silver surface has worn away through use, die-stamped silver solder joints, folded wire edges, and a lack of electroplating maker marks.

An antique plate mug can be displayed on an open bookshelf, positioned on a mantelpiece alongside vintage books, or repurposed as a pen pot on an executive desk.

Clean gently with warm water and a mild non-detergent soap using a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes or aggressive silver dips that strip the remaining silver layer away from the copper base.
