Antique Georgian Copper Log Bin Coal Bucket Fireside Bucket Planter

19th century
Description

A wonderful large antique Georgian copper log bin dating from the early 19th century. Hand crafted in heavy gauge copper with a substantial wrought iron swing handle and brass rim, this is a decorative yet highly practical country house fireside piece.

The beautifully hand hammered copper body has developed a rich warm patina over generations of use, giving it the character and authenticity that collectors seek. The riveted side seam and forged iron fittings demonstrate traditional period craftsmanship, while the generous proportions make it ideal for storing logs, kindling or coal beside a fireplace.

Originally used as a coal or log bucket in Georgian homes, pieces of this scale are increasingly sought after today as decorative fireside accessories, planters, umbrella stands or statement interior design pieces in both traditional and contemporary settings.

A handsome and honest example with excellent colour and plenty of decorative appeal.

Condition Report

Good antique condition with age related wear, marks and patination throughout. Attractive verdigris to the interior. Minor historic dents and surface wear commensurate with age and use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Georgian era, copper log bins and buckets were functional hearth accessories used to store coal or wooden logs for domestic heating.

These vessels were typically constructed from hand-hammered copper sheets, featuring reinforced brass rims and hand-forged wrought iron swing handles.

Genuine period copper metalware displays dovetailed or hand-riveted seams, surface irregularities from manual hammering, and natural surface oxidisation.

An antique copper bucket functions effectively alongside contemporary wood-burning stoves as log storage, or repurposed as a substantial indoor planter.

Maintenance involves regular dusting with a soft dry cloth while avoiding abrasive polishes or harsh chemical cleaners that strip the natural aged patina.
