Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This is a fine antique Chinese carpet from the 1920 period, presented as a large rectangular rug made from super soft wool and cotton with a full pile and minimal old repairs. The piece displays a vibrant blue field in various shades that give depth and artistic appeal, decorated with multiple medallion roundels featuring lotus flowers or cranes, floral sprigs, and shou characters, all enclosed by a wide beige geometric border. The carpet measures 335 cm by 459 cm. In a home today, this textile provides a striking foundation for living rooms, dining spaces, or large entrance halls, anchoring a room with traditional Chinese style and Art Deco glamour.

FAQs

Antique Chinese carpets are defined by open fields, central medallions, and balanced pictorial symbols drawn from Chinese art, such as dragons, clouds, and floral roundels. Unlike Western Asian rugs with dense overall patterns, Chinese weaving places emphasis on negative space and harmonious balance.

These carpets were typically hand-knotted using native wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable and mineral dyes, particularly indigo for shades of blue, provided rich, long-lasting colouration.

Authentic pieces display hand-knotted construction visible on the underside, subtle colour variations (abrash) from natural dyeing processes, and a cotton fringe integrated directly into the warp threads rather than sewn on afterwards.

A large vibrant blue carpet serves as an anchoring focal point in neutral, modern, or traditional rooms. Placing modern minimalist furniture atop the carpet creates a dynamic contrast between classical textile craft and clean architectural lines.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar to protect the pile. Rotate the carpet periodically to ensure even wear and exposure to natural light, and seek specialist professional cleaning for stain removal.
